I was once a People Developer Manager in a FMCG tasked to get a group of merchandise planners to learn analytics. I found that getting others to learn data analytic require a structured approach and a different mindset. Below are my insights.

What I discovered about learning Power BI

  • Learn in small bites Research showed that learners have about 60 minutes of focus time when it comes to learning each day. Hence, getting working adults to learn in small bites like one hour per day is the max to capitalize on their focus time in the midst of all the distractions.

  • Growth Mindset: A learner will encounter error and similar to most software (even excel!). One needs to have the growth mindset to learn from error and find ways to troubleshoot. In the process, a learner will also develop the grit to bite and move on to find breakthroughs. This is critical mindset whenever one face difficulty in life and grit and tenacity is ke to find success.

  • Community : Whenever a problem is encountered, learn to think beyond yourself. There is always someone out there who has the answer. The key is to ask around.

  • Discovery Mindset: Practicing Power BI on different scenarios has helped myself discover the capabilities -- what it could do for us and for our stakeholders when we need to find deeper insights for decision making. E.g there is a predictive tool within Power BI that is powered by AI that we could leverage on for greater insights.
